Free and Cheap Things to Do with Your Baby in Tulsa This Summer

Twelve months into fatherhood, I’ve learned that entertaining a baby doesn’t require expensive outings or elaborate plans. With my teacher wife off work for the summer and our little one becoming more curious about the world, we’ve discovered plenty of budget-friendly activities around Tulsa that keep both parents and baby happy.

The key is finding places where your infant can safely explore while you enjoy a change of scenery without spending a fortune.

Parks Perfect for Crawling and Walking Practice

The park systems in Tulsa and Sand Springs offer incredible variety for families with young children. Case Community Park in Sand Springs has become one of our regular destinations with its paved walking trail that’s perfect for stroller walks and sightseeing. The infant-friendly playground equipment and splash pad make it an all-in-one destination that keeps both parents and baby entertained and the little free library gives us options for bedtime stories.

Riverside Park in Tulsa remains a go-to spot because of its paved walking trails and shaded areas perfect for picnic blankets. The ducks near the Arkansas River provide endless entertainment for our 10-month-old, who’s fascinated by anything that moves.

Gathering Place deserves special mention as a world-class destination that happens to be completely free. The children’s adventure playground has areas specifically designed for toddlers, but even infants enjoy the sensory experiences. Our kid loves crawling and climbing right now, and Gathering Places has lots of different options to keep him entertained, from the Great Lawn to the myriad sandboxes, as well as rubber surface areas designed for tumble-prone kids.

For quieter moments, Woodward Park offers peaceful walking paths and plenty of green space. The rose garden provides a beautiful backdrop for photos, and the playground equipment gives you a preview of future adventures with your growing child.

Keystone Ancient Forest in Sand Springs offers a 0.8-mile paved ADA-compliant trail along with more than two miles of gravel trails that are easily navigable with a quality off-road stroller. You don’t want to bite off more than you can chew with this one – but we enjoyed a short, comfortable stroll in the shade with our boy.

Chandler Park rounds out our regular rotation with its splash pad, disc golf courses, and hiking paths. The variety keeps things interesting, and there’s always something new for curious little eyes to discover.

Library Programs That Welcome Little Ones

The Tulsa City-County Library system is super welcoming to families with infants. Living in Sand Springs, we frequent Pratt Library and Charles Page Library, both part of the county system that shares programming across all locations. These libraries host “Build a Reader” programs that introduce basic concepts like colors and shapes through songs and simple activities. These sessions help with social development and give parents a chance to connect with other families.

The beauty of the county system is that programming is coordinated, so if we miss story time at one location, we can often catch it at another library later in the week. The librarians understand that infants learn through movement and exploration, making these sessions welcoming even for babies who aren’t ready to sit still.

Both Sand Springs locations have become our rainy day refuges. The children’s sections offer safe spaces for babies to explore, and the familiar environment helps with our little one’s comfort level during outings.

Shopping Centers as Climate-Controlled Entertainment

When Tulsa’s summer heat becomes unbearable, air-conditioned shopping areas offer relief and entertainment. Woodland Hills Mall provides a large, climate-controlled environment perfect for stroller walks with plenty of interesting storefronts and people-watching opportunities. The family restrooms and nursing areas make it practical for parents, and the variety of shops means there’s always something colorful to catch your baby’s attention. Between the indoor playgrounds and the aquariums at Scheels, Woodland Hills is well worth the 30-minute drive from our house.

Tulsa Hills Shopping Center works well for longer outings because of its size and variety of stores. We’ve spent entire mornings walking between shops, stopping at kid-friendly stores like Books-a-Million where our little one loves picking out books and stuffed animals, and PetSmart where the fish tanks and small animals provide endless fascination. Most of the stores have family restrooms that make it easy to handle diaper changes when needed.

Seasonal Events and Free Entertainment

Summer in Tulsa brings numerous free events perfect for families. Music on the Lawn at Cedar Rock Inn provides a relaxed outdoor concert atmosphere where babies can enjoy the music and social environment without the pressure of staying quiet. The lawn setting allows for easy movement if your little one gets restless.

Summer’s Fifth Night at Utica Square offers another excellent free concert series with a family-friendly atmosphere. The outdoor venue works well for infants who might need to move around, and the regular schedule makes it easy to plan visits around nap times.

Events like the International Day of Play at Philbrook Museum demonstrate Tulsa’s commitment to family programming. Even if your baby doesn’t participate in organized activities yet, the festival atmosphere and outdoor setting create positive experiences for the whole family.

Indoor Alternatives for Extreme Weather Days

Discovery Lab at Gathering Place requires admission for adults but infants get in free, and teachers can get in free with school ID. The interactive exhibits and air conditioning make it perfect for hot summer days.

Bass Pro Shops offers similar entertainment value with its aquariums and taxidermy displays, serving as a free alternative to the local aquarium. The variety keeps infants engaged, and the large space allows for plenty of walking and exploring.

Making the Most of Free Time

The secret to successful outings with an infant lies in managing expectations and staying flexible. We’ve learned to pack more supplies than we think we need and to have backup plans for weather or mood changes.

Timing matters more than destination. We schedule activities around our baby’s nap times and pack formula for the road. Morning adventures work best for us before the worst of the heat sets in, leaving afternoons for indoor activities.

Bringing a wagon or stroller with good storage has transformed our ability to spend longer periods away from home. Having supplies easily accessible reduces stress and allows for spontaneous extensions of successful outings. We recommend the Jeep Sport All-Terrain Stroller Wagon by Delta Children. It’s been a game-changer, giving Jordan plenty of room to play without feeling trapped while easily handling most off-road scenarios.

The goal isn’t to fill every moment with structured activity. Sometimes the best entertainment comes from simple experiences like watching construction workers, observing other children at play, or just enjoying a change of environment.

Summer break with an infant doesn’t have to strain your budget or leave you searching for entertainment. Tulsa offers numerous opportunities for families willing to explore beyond traditional tourist attractions. The key is finding joy in simple experiences and remembering that your baby’s wonder at everyday sights makes even ordinary outings feel special.
