What is your dream vacation? Backpacking across Europe? Sailing the Caribbean, pirate style? Snowed into an Alaskan cabin during the 30 days of night, with nothing but a stack of books and a stack of firewood to help you escape from society?
With seven billion people on the planet, there are a lot of different dream vacations out there.
My wife Charity’s ideal getaway involves traveling through Europe, visiting World War II historical landmarks. She’s particularly keen on seeing the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam and the Auschwitz concentration camp. Her goal is to recreate photos her grandfather took during the war, connecting with her family history.
As for me, I have three dream vacations – each wildly different from the others.
The Hawaiian island of Oahu calls to many people with its beautiful beaches and unbelievable scenery. Add in the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, and it’s no surprise that more than half a million tourists visit the island each year.
Sure the ocean and hiking trails are appealing, but more than anything, my love for the TV show LOST has me yearning to explore Oahu and find all the public beaches and iconic sites and sceneries from my favorite series of all time.
Though current tensions make it highly unlikely I’d be taking this journey any time soon, I’ve always wanted to travel through the Middle East, exploring biblical sites in Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Turkey, and Iraq. The idea of walking in the footsteps of ancient Hebrew history fascinates me.
Another bucket list item that’ll be on the backburner for quite a while is hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, which my wife isn’t a big fan of since we just had a kid.
